At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

1 Corinthians 9-19.27

Body needs?

"I beat my body and make it my slave so that ... I myself will not be disqualified ..." (v.27)

An area of life in which we need self-control is that which has to do with bodily indulgence. The body, by its human standards, is comfort-loving and too much comfort is weakening to the soul.

"Whatever increases the strength and influence of your body over your mind, however innocent it may be in itself -- that thing is sin to you."

Before each one of us is an altar of sacrifice.

Philippians 2:17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.

There is some crucifixion of the flesh, some physical self-sacrifice, the abandonment of some bodily indulgence which the spirit of man knows that he is called to make.

"What does our bodies clamor for? One is food -- and generally speaking, we eat far more than is good for us.

Luke 12:23 Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.

Another thing the body clamors for is sleep. People differ in the amount of sleep that they need, but we must watch that we do not spend more time in bed than is good for us.

Luke 12:35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,

How about the luxuries of life. It has been said that the luxuries of one generation become the bare necessities of the next.

Luke 18:22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

We must not go too far and see the body as an enemy that has to be continuously afflicted. Self-control helps the Christian to offer to God an obedient personality, but sensitive to guidance and ready for all His perfect will.

Romans 6:13
Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.

Romans 8:10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

Luke 10:1-12 Called to Labor

Jesus didn’t try to do it alone, He chose 12 men whom he trained to help do the work.

2Timothy 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

Jesus had the apostles as his helpers, but he also “appointed 72 others” (Luke 10:1). They went out “two by two”.

Ephesians 4:12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up

Too many people offer excuses; as Moses stood barefooted before the burning bush giving excuse after excuse to God in Exodus 3 and 4. “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?” (3:11). “Suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice” (4:1). “I am not eloquent [of speech]” (4:10). He could have said “I’m too old.” But he also could have said to God, “Here am I! Send me” (Isaiah 6:8).
Jesus’ first bit of advice to the 72 was to pray for more workers.

He also told them some strangers would show them hospitality, but others would not. Never embark without praying for God’s guidance.
Maybe like Paul; He will direct you else where.

We are not alone; the Holy Spirit is working with us. Our job is to plant and to water, but God alone gives the increase. The work we do today may not come to success for some time, but seeds planted now could have a great impact later.

1Corinthians 15:58 says, “knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

The 72 went forth and did the work of the Lord. Then they returned to Jesus their hearts were joyful. They had seen the mighty works God had done through them.

There is no greater thrill for a Christian than to lead someone to Christ. That is our purpose. Jesus came to “seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10). Then he gave the Great Commission to the church. We should go, baptize, and teach.

“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. We each need to answer the call to labor.
